Measles Outbreak Exposes a Public Health Emergency
Bangladesh is struggling to contain a major measles outbreak that has caused 1,147 reported deaths, according to figures from the World Health Organization published by Reuters on October 17. Between mid-March and October 9, authorities registered approximately 202,000 suspected infections, including 22,000 laboratory-confirmed cases. Children under five accounted for 94% of reported deaths.
The scale of the outbreak is particularly striking for a country whose routine childhood vaccination program had previously achieved high coverage. The WHO reported more suspected measles cases in Bangladesh than in any other country during 2026.
Disruptions to Immunization and Emergency Response
Political turmoil and disruptions to health services in 2025 contributed to declining vaccination rates. WHO and UNICEF estimates put first-dose coverage at 90% and second-dose coverage at 86%, below the approximately 95% coverage needed to prevent outbreaks.
An emergency campaign vaccinated nearly 20 million children in April and May, but weaknesses in population records and outreach meant many were overlooked. Later comparisons suggested that the campaign’s target lists substantially underestimated the eligible population. Authorities launched another effort in September to reach 3.4 million children previously missed.
Lessons for International Health Cooperation
The crisis underscores how quickly outbreaks can spread when immunization programs lose continuity. In remote communities, incomplete birth registration, unfilled health positions and limited access to clinics have made it harder to identify and protect vulnerable children.
Bangladesh’s experience is relevant to other countries facing disruptions in public health funding or routine medical services. International support for vaccination, reliable population data and disease surveillance remains central to containing measles and preventing similar emergencies.
