Brazil Reports Lowest Amazon Deforestation Rate in Nearly Four Decades

Amazon Deforestation Reaches a Record Low

Brazil reported on October 16 that deforestation in the Amazon had fallen to its lowest level since official satellite monitoring began in 1988. Data from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) showed 3,335 square kilometers of forest cleared between August 2025 and July 2026, approximately 42% less than in the preceding period.

The result fell below the previous record low of 4,571 square kilometers recorded in 2011-2012. Figures come from INPE’s PRODES monitoring system, which measures annual forest loss through satellite imagery.

Environmental Policy and Enforcement

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took office in 2023 promising to end deforestation by 2030, following an increase in forest destruction under former President Jair Bolsonaro. The latest figures suggest substantial progress toward that pledge.

Environmental advocates emphasized the importance of government commitment and enforcement in reducing illegal clearing. Beyond the Amazon, Brazil reported that deforestation in the Cerrado savanna also fell by around 24%, reaching 5,517 square kilometers, the lowest value in the data series beginning in 2001. However, forest protection continues to face pressure from land conversion, fires and competing economic interests.

Climate Diplomacy and Brazil’s Election

The Amazon’s importance for biodiversity and carbon storage makes the decline relevant to international climate negotiations. Lower forest loss could strengthen Brazil’s position when discussing its environmental commitments with foreign governments and multilateral institutions.

The political outlook remains uncertain ahead of an October 25 presidential runoff between Lula and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. Both have made environmental commitments, but their approaches to enforcement differ. Sustaining the decline will depend on policy continuity, effective monitoring and the government’s capacity to respond to pressures on forested land.
