Bulgaria Summons Ambassador After Black Sea Drone Attack

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev has summoned Russia’s ambassador after a drone attack sank a merchant ship off Bulgaria’s coast. The Guinea-Bissau-flagged vessel HS Dignity sank 17 nautical miles east of Krapets, leaving six crew members rescued and ten missing. Meanwhile, a second drone strike targeted the Ukrainian-owned cargo ship Chelsea-3 nearby.

Firstly, this incident marks a dangerous escalation within Bulgaria’s Black Sea exclusive economic zone. Just one week prior, another commercial ship, the Alfa Watan, sank in the same area. Consequently, NATO allies are closely monitoring the region. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed ongoing coordination with Bulgaria, Turkey, and Romania. Furthermore, officials warned that attacks occurring slightly closer to land could trigger NATO’s Article 5 collective defense clause.

In addition, diplomatic tensions between Sofia and Moscow have reached a critical point. Prime Minister Radev called the strikes “absolutely unacceptable” during an emergency security meeting. Although Russian envoy Eleonora Mitrofanova denied knowledge of the operations, Bulgarian defense officials noted that the attacks clearly benefit Russian strategic interests. Conversely, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha directly accused Moscow of targeting civilian shipping to endanger global food security.

Finally, the broader conflict continues to threaten vital maritime trade routes. Both Russia and Ukraine remain major global grain exporters, making Black Sea transit essential. However, Moscow continues to target western Black Sea shipping, claiming vessels carry military cargo. Ultimately, escalating drone strikes on commercial traffic highlight growing security risks along NATO’s eastern flank.
