China’s trade

China’s trade surges in first half of 2026, maintaining growth amid global tensions

A Massive Boom in Global Shipments

China’s exports continued to grow robustly in June despite severe geopolitical headwinds. The country’s global exports rose by 27 percent year on year, reaching an impressive $412.39 billion. Consequently, this sudden surge beat the original growth forecasts set by market economists. Imports also grew rapidly by 36 percent last month to hit $286.76 billion. This combined growth led to a massive trade surplus of $125.62 billion for the nation. Chief economists emphasize that this export acceleration serves as a primary growth engine for the Chinese economy.

Technology Exports Drive Market Acceleration

The global artificial intelligence boom heavily supported Chinese shipments across multiple vital sectors. Specifically, exports of integrated circuits rose by 121.9 percent year on year in value terms. Strong domestic demand for advanced AI infrastructure also boosted local microchip import value by 72.3 percent. Furthermore, technology-related exports drove substantial growth in mechanical and electrical products. Officials also highlighted the rapid international expansion of the country’s robotics industry. For instance, exports of Chinese-made surgical robots more than tripled during the first half of the year. Conversely, rare earth exports fell sharply by 34.1 percent as Beijing tightened mineral shipping controls.

Regional Trajectories and Future Trade Horizons

Regionally, China’s trade with several key global partners experienced double-digit growth last month. Shipments to members of ASEAN rose by 34.6 percent, while exports to the European Union increased by 18.5 percent. Additionally, exports to South Korea surged by 42.6 percent during this single monthly period. Experts note that these high figures reflect substantial front-loading ahead of upcoming U.S. tariff deadlines. Although global inflationary pressures may test the economy later this year, customs officials remain confident. They firmly assert their capability to maintain this strong positive momentum in foreign trade.
