Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella officially announced the end of dialogue with three illegal armed organizations. The decision affects negotiations with two FARC dissident groups and the paramilitaries known as ACSN.
Consequently, the national government revoked the official appointments of state representatives across all three negotiation channels. President De la Espriella stated that these criminal factions failed to demonstrate genuine or verifiable intentions toward disarmament. Furthermore, he emphasized that maintaining diplomatic dialogues requires a concrete commitment to civil reintegration, justice, and state law.
Policy Shift Away From Total Peace
The canceled negotiations were originally established under the previous administration of Gustavo Petro. During that tenure, the government pursued a broad framework known as Total Peace.
However, President De la Espriella took office on August 7 with a significantly tougher stance on national security. He publicly criticized past diplomatic efforts as ineffective mechanisms that ultimately favored illegal activities and drug trafficking. Additionally, the president asserted that national peace must be actively enforced through legitimate state power and strict legal compliance rather than endless concessions.
Targeted Organizations and Regional Implications
The termination of peace talks directly impacts key dissident structures operating across strategic regions of Colombia. Specifically, the measure targets the Estado Mayor de Bloques y Frente alongside the Coordinadora Nacional Ejercito Bolivariano.
Simultaneously, the administration ended all formal contact with the Autodefensas Conquistadores de la Sierra Nevada. International security analysts view this political turn as a decisive break from past policy. Therefore, Colombian defense forces are expected to escalate military operations against these armed groups nationwide.
