Colombia’s outgoing defense minister has issued a warning regarding a heightened risk of terrorism targeting the upcoming inauguration of President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella. Authorities reported tracking specific security threats from criminal and rebel factions aiming to disrupt the democratic proceedings.
Unlike traditional ceremonies held in the capital of Bogotá, the swearing-in is set to take place in Cali in the country’s southwest. This location requested by the incoming president despite its proximity to regions dominated by insurgent groups. The area is close to active operations of dissident factions of the former FARC rebel group. High-profile international attendees are expected at the event, including the King of Spain and the presidents of Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Ecuador.
To safeguard the venue and surrounding region, the military is deploying approximately 11,000 troops and enforcing a strict no-fly zone for drones. Which have previously been utilized by armed militants to deliver explosive payloads. The heightened tension follows the political shift signaled by the election of the hard-right president-elect. In short, who campaigned on dismantling the current administration’s peaceful negotiation strategies with armed groups and taking a strict stance against criminal organizations. Meanwhile, outgoing President Gustavo Petro has contested the election results and announced he will not attend the ceremony.
Security forces remain on high alert to neutralize potential attacks, as the relocation of the ceremony to a region with significant rebel activity presents major logistical and safety challenges for the transition of power.
