Important geopolitical decisions regarding Egyptian parliament military aid Saudi Arabia Houthis defense operations were formally enacted in Cairo on Monday. The House of Representatives passed a constitutional mandate authorizing President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to deploy military support for Saudi Arabia if formal assistance is requested by Riyadh.
The parliamentary vote passed with the required two-thirds majority following closed-door security discussions. House Speaker Hisham Badawi confirmed that the mandate grants President el-Sisi executive authority to implement necessary defense measures to protect Saudi territorial integrity. However, Egyptian officials emphasized that potential military involvement will remain strictly defensive, ruling out direct offensive air or ground strikes inside Yemen.
Furthermore, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed Cairo’s commitment to diplomatic mediation following high-level consultations in Riyadh. Because Egypt maintains direct economic interests in stabilizing Red Sea maritime trade routes linked to the Suez Canal, Cairo aims to protect vital commercial transit without deepening regional military entanglement.
The legislative authorization follows recent Houthi long-range missile and drone attacks targeting Riyadh International Airport and Saudi Aramco oil facilities. Because Houthi naval strikes near the Bab el-Mandeb strait have reduced commercial vessel traffic through the Suez Canal, Egypt faces significant reductions in national transit revenues.
Concurrently, President el-Sisi met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in Cairo on Monday to discuss regional de-escalation. Guterres commended Egypt’s diplomatic leadership and urged maximum military restraint across the Persian Gulf. Ultimately, while Cairo provides clear security guarantees to its strategic Gulf partner, diplomatic negotiations remain Egypt’s primary foreign policy objective.
