An Ethiopia Eritrea sever diplomatic relations Tigray conflict crisis has erupted across the Horn of Africa. On Thursday, Ethiopia announced the closure of its embassy in Asmara. Furthermore, Ethiopian authorities ordered ten Eritrean diplomats to leave the country within 48 hours. Ethiopian officials cited national security threats as the primary reason for the expulsion. Consequently, Eritrea responded by breaking off all diplomatic ties. This sharp breakdown follows heavy explosions reported near military headquarters in Addis Ababa. As a result, international observers fear a major regional escalation.
Diplomatic Expulsions and Regional Alliances
In addition to the confrontation with Eritrea, Ethiopia expelled a senior Egyptian diplomat under a matching 48-hour deadline. Therefore, Egypt retaliated by ordering an Ethiopian embassy official to depart Cairo immediately. Longstanding tensions regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) continue to strain bilateral relations between Ethiopia and Egypt.
Meanwhile, internal political dynamics within Ethiopia have deteriorated rapidly. Last month, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) joined six armed opposition groups. This new alliance includes the Amhara Fano militia. Moreover, their stated goal centers on removing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed from power. On the other hand, Eritrean officials denied supplying military support to opposition forces. Instead, Asmara accused Ethiopian leadership of deflecting attention from domestic political challenges.
Humanitarian Impacts and Military Operations
On the ground, heavy fighting continues across Tigray, Afar, and Amhara regions. Federal forces and allied troops are advancing toward the regional capital of Mekelle. However, civilian casualties are rising quickly amid intense clashes. For instance, medical workers in Alamata confirmed at least 52 civilian deaths during recent shelling.
Additionally, thousands of displaced residents have fled along the vital transport corridor toward Djibouti. Because internet access remains blocked across northern territories, independent verification remains difficult. Besides, United Nations officials warn that ongoing drone strikes jeopardize vital aid operations. Consequently, the African Union urges all involved nations to exercise restraint and pursue diplomatic dialogue immediately.
