OpenAI’s decision to make its generative AI models available on Amazon Web Services (AWS) marks a significant shift toward a multi‑cloud strategy following the end of its exclusive cloud arrangement with Microsoft. AWS customers will soon be able to access OpenAI models and the Codex agent for code generation through Amazon Bedrock, with general availability expected in the coming weeks, responding to what Matt Garman described as long‑standing customer demand: “This is what our customers have been asking us for for a really long time.” The collaboration includes Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents powered by OpenAI, which will support the creation of customized AI agents capable of retaining memory from prior interactions, targeting complex enterprise use cases.
The move comes one day after OpenAI and Microsoft modified their partnership, allowing OpenAI to cap revenue‑sharing payments and run its products on any cloud provider rather than solely on Microsoft Azure. While Microsoft remains a critical supplier of computing power, OpenAI executives have acknowledged that the exclusive arrangement limited the ability to serve enterprises that primarily use AWS and Bedrock.
The AWS expansion builds on an already deepening relationship: in late 2025 OpenAI announced a 38 billion dollar cloud commitment with AWS, and a few months later Amazon pledged to invest 50 billion dollars in OpenAI, accompanied by plans for OpenAI to use two gigawatts of AWS Trainium chips to train AI models.
The partnership announcement also coincided with scrutiny of OpenAI’s financial performance after reports that it missed internal targets for users and revenue, which briefly weighed on shares of AI hardware makers like Nvidia and Broadcom. OpenAI leaders Sam Altman and CFO Sarah Friar rejected the characterization of internal disagreement over spending, calling it “ridiculous” and emphasizing alignment on maximizing compute purchases.
