Rubio presses Lebanon weapons confiscation Hezbollah Aoun call highlights growing regional security friction

High-stakes diplomatic talks regarding Rubio presses Lebanon weapons confiscation Hezbollah Aoun directives intensified on Thursday. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a direct phone call with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun following the interception of a truck carrying 780 kilograms of explosives between Beirut and the Bekaa Valley. Consequently, Washington urged Lebanese authorities to retain all seized materials and hold accountable those responsible for coordinating the shipment.

Lebanese security forces intercepted the transport vehicle carrying 250 kg of TNT and 550 pounds of C4 plastic explosives along a critical highway corridor. Subsequently, Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah publicly acknowledged the group’s connection to the shipment during a press statement at the Lebanese parliament. Fadlallah demanded the immediate return of the military materials and the prompt release of detained personnel, arguing that the cargo was designated for defense operations against Israel.

Meanwhile, Secretary Rubio insisted that returning weapons or explosives to Hezbollah should remain entirely out of the question. Furthermore, US officials advocated for direct communication channels between Lebanese and Israeli military leadership to prevent operational misunderstandings.

In response to US demands, President Aoun urged Washington to press Israel to halt ongoing military strikes and widespread infrastructure destruction across southern Lebanon. Although Lebanese and Israeli envoys participated in rare direct talks in Washington earlier this spring, frequent border hostilities continue to complicate regional stabilization efforts.

Concurrently, Lebanese officials report frequent civilian casualties and systematic destruction of border villages despite existing framework agreements. Because the Lebanese government declared Hezbollah’s independent military activities illegal earlier this year, security forces face increasing pressure to assert complete state control over armaments across the nation.
