APEC Advances Smart Tourism in Asia-Pacific
Digital innovation has become a central pillar of APEC digital tourism, as ministers from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) gathered in Macao, China, for the 2026 Tourism Ministerial Meeting. The discussions emphasized how emerging technologies can strengthen regional cooperation, improve traveler experiences, and promote sustainable economic growth across member economies.
Tourism continues to play a vital role in the Asia-Pacific economy. According to APEC, member economies welcomed 439 million international visitors in 2024, with the majority traveling within the APEC region. Ministers agreed that accelerating digital transformation is essential to maintaining this momentum while making tourism more inclusive and resilient.
Among the key priorities presented were the adoption of innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, real-time translation devices, and digital destination management tools. These solutions aim to remove language barriers, enrich visitor experiences, and help tourism businesses develop smarter, cross-border travel products.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of seamless travel through digital reforms, including electronic visas and more efficient border procedures. Research cited by APEC indicates that replacing traditional visas with e-visas could increase bilateral travel flows by up to 15 percent, demonstrating the economic benefits of digitalization.
Overall, the ministerial meeting reinforced APEC’s commitment to leveraging digital innovation in tourism to support economic recovery, strengthen regional connectivity, and ensure that the benefits of tourism extend to local communities throughout the Asia-Pacific. By combining technological advancement with international cooperation, APEC seeks to build a more competitive and sustainable tourism sector for the future.
