Rubio’s extensive four-day visit to the region aims to advance a free and open Indo-Pacific. However, complex disputes over critical minerals and maritime security will likely loom over the meetings. For example, Trump recently signed a major executive order to curb defense reliance on foreign adversaries. This new policy directs military contractors to secure their supply chains against subversion. Ultimately, this directive intensifies the great power competition between both nations.
