South Korean investment targets Alaska gas exports
President Donald Trump is expected to announce roughly $54 billion in South Korean investment for an Alaska natural gas export project. The White House confirmed the announcement after Bloomberg first reported it. Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan has long supported the proposal and encouraged South Korean participation.
The investment comes from commitments made under a 2025 trade agreement between the United States and South Korea. Seoul promised $350 billion in U.S. investments in exchange for lower American tariffs on South Korean cars, auto parts and other products.
Foreign investment becomes a campaign message
Trump’s announcement will be his second effort this week to promote foreign investment in a state with a competitive Senate race. On Monday, he presented plans for a $15 billion steel plant in Iowa backed by an Indian industrial conglomerate.
Meanwhile, Sullivan is seeking a third term against Democrat Mary Peltola, a former member of Congress. Iowa Republican Ashley Hinson is also running a close race against Democrat Josh Turek. Democrats are targeting both Republican-held seats and need a net gain of four to control the Senate.
Fuel prices add pressure before the midterms
Alaska and Iowa supported Trump comfortably in his previous presidential campaigns, but their Senate contests have become competitive. The midterm elections are less than five weeks away. Republicans face public concern about near-record fuel prices and dissatisfaction with Trump’s economic management.
A late-July AP-NORC poll found that only about one-third of Americans approved of Trump’s handling of the economy. About seven in ten respondents described economic conditions as poor. The unresolved war with Iran has also contributed to voter worries about fuel costs.
