Trump’s Third Term

In recent statements, President Donald Trump and Steve Bannon have openly suggested the possibility of Trump remaining in power beyond the constitutionally permitted two terms. During a 2024 event with conservative Christians, Trump told supporters they “won’t have to vote anymore” after his reelection, implying permanent political dominance. The crowd’s enthusiastic response underscored his enduring appeal among certain religious groups.

Since returning to office, Trump has fueled speculation about extending his presidency. Reinforcing the idea by displaying “Trump 2028” merchandise, posting AI-generated images of himself as a monarch. Even telling reporters he is “not joking” about bypassing the 22nd Amendment, which limits presidents to two terms. These gestures, once unimaginable, are presented publicly and unapologetically, blurring the line between political performance and authoritarian ambition.

Bannon reinforced this narrative in an interview with The Economist, asserting that Trump “is going to get a third term” and describing him as a “vehicle of divine providence.” He claimed that there is a plan to secure Trump’s continued rule, though he provided no specifics. His remarks cast Trump’s leadership in spiritual terms, framing political power as divinely sanctioned.

Why has the media not reported on this?

The article criticizes the mainstream media’s muted response to these declarations, arguing that journalists have failed to treat such comments with the urgency they deserve. Despite occasional reporting on Trump’s controversial action, the press has not fully questioned the broader implications of these moves.

The commentary concludes that Trump’s rhetoric and his advisers’ statements reflect an open challenge to the foundations of U.S. democracy. He, as the president  of the US and his inner circle appear to be normalizing the idea of an indefinite presidency. The author warns that the lack of media alarm may signal a dangerous complacency at a critical moment for the American constitutional system.
