Wall Street rallies within 0.4% of its record after oil prices and bond yields ease

Lower Oil and Bond Yields Lift Markets

Wall Street moved close to its all-time high as oil prices and bond yields gave back much of the previous week’s increases. The S&P 500 rose 1.5% and finished within 0.4% of its record. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 366 points, while the Nasdaq composite climbed 2.3% to a new high.

Brent crude fell 3.4% to $100.34 per barrel after approaching $110 the week before. Oil remained considerably more expensive than its roughly $72 level from earlier in the summer. Prices continue to fluctuate because the war with Iran has restricted shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.

Easing Pressure Encourages Investors

Falling oil prices helped the 10-year Treasury yield decline to 4.95% from 5.01%. High yields make borrowing more expensive for governments, households, and businesses. Concerns about inflation and government debt had pushed the yield above 5% for the first time since 2023.

Gasoline still averaged nearly $4.48 per gallon in the United States, compared with less than $4.32 a week earlier. Morgan Stanley strategist Michael Wilson identified another rise in oil and refined fuel prices as the main near-term threat to his year-end forecast for stocks.

Technology and Diplomacy Add Momentum

Artificial intelligence companies led the rally after recovering from losses at the start of the previous week. Advanced Micro Devices jumped 9.9% and reached a market value of $1 trillion. Nvidia added 2.3%, reflecting expectations that AI development will continue creating strong demand for computer chips.

Diplomatic developments also improved optimism. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described talks with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng as successful. China confirmed that President Xi Jinping would visit the United States from September 23 to 25. Trade, tariffs, and AI safety were expected on the agenda.

Other gains included Coinbase Global and Robinhood Markets after bitcoin rose above $86,000. Warner Bros. Discovery advanced 10.8% following a settlement involving challenges to its Paramount buyout. Markets also rose internationally, including increases of 0.9% in France, 1.2% in Hong Kong, and 1.6% in South Korea.
