‘We will certainly look at it’: Trump says he will consider permanent US military base in Lithuania

Discussions regarding a potential shift in Baltic security developed after statements on Trump consider permanent US military base Lithuania Sinkevicius proposals. US President Donald Trump stated that Washington will evaluate a proposal from Vilnius to host a permanent American military presence. Lithuania expressed readiness to offer optimal hosting conditions to accommodate permanent US troops on NATO’s eastern flank.

Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius welcomed President Trump’s open stance toward the defense initiative. Sinkevičius instructed the Ministry of Defense to conduct preliminary assessments detailing host-nation conditions and logistics for long-term deployments. Currently, approximately 1,000 US troops participate in nine-month rotational deployments in Lithuania, with similar rotational forces stationed in Estonia and Poland.

Meanwhile, neighboring Poland continues advancing plans for a permanent US defense facility following preliminary White House approvals. Lithuanian officials emphasized that permanent American deployments would complement existing regional defense arrangements alongside ongoing NATO missions.

In addition to American rotational units, Lithuania is preparing infrastructure to host a German military brigade comprising approximately 5,000 personnel by late 2027. During bilateral talks in Berlin with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, Sinkevičius reaffirmed Lithuania’s commitment to fulfilling all infrastructure obligations on schedule.

Furthermore, Baltic defense officials stressed that combined allied presences demonstrate NATO’s collective determination to secure its eastern borders. Comprehensive assessments regarding host support, funding, and operational logistics remain under review by defense authorities in Washington and Vilnius.
