US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis in Athens to discuss regional security, maritime defense, and expanded natural gas supply routes across Southeastern Europe.

During two hours of bilateral talks, Secretary Rubio commended Greece as an exemplary NATO ally for maintaining strong military expenditure. Rubio emphasized that European nations must take greater responsibility for defending their own continent. Energy cooperation represented another core topic on the diplomatic agenda. Gerapetritis detailed Greece’s expanding infrastructure as a primary transit hub for American liquefied natural gas (LNG) entering Central and Eastern Europe. Rubio noted that growing LNG imports and electrical grid interconnections reinforce European energy independence.

Furthermore, the delegates agreed to strengthen counter-terrorism information sharing through a new Memorandum of Understanding. While navigating complex regional dynamics, Washington and Athens reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding critical maritime routes and regional security.
