A major Yemen Houthi offensive Taiz Marib oil region push is threatening crucial government-controlled territories across the nation. On Friday, Yemeni government forces executed roughly 20 airstrikes with Saudi military backing against Houthi positions near Taiz. As the third most populous city in Yemen, Taiz represents a key strategic transport hub near the Red Sea. Furthermore, rebel forces are advancing toward Marib, home to the country’s primary oil and gas reserves. Consequently, capturing these strategic zones could decisively shift the civil war in favor of Ansar Allah.
Escalating Cross-Border Attacks and Strategic Maritime Control
In addition to ground offensives, Houthi forces continue targeting Saudi Arabian infrastructure. Saudi air defense forces reported intercepting ballistic missiles over Jazan and Khamis Mushait near energy installations and airbases. Meanwhile, the current military escalation resumed in July after the collapse of a 2022 ceasefire agreement.
During early offensive actions, Houthi fighters captured over 160 kilometers of Red Sea coastline, including the port of Mocha and Mayun Island. Therefore, the rebels now threaten maritime traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a global trade bottleneck. Furthermore, taking Taiz would secure the rebel rear guard and solidify control over vital regional shipping lanes.
Capturing Marib remains a central objective for the Houthis to gain leverage over energy revenues. According to UN security experts, control over oil and gas fields would force international stakeholders into advantageous peace negotiations. Moreover, controlling energy assets would provide indispensable financial revenues for the rebel movement.
Additionally, the renewed fighting has intensified an unprecedented humanitarian crisis across the country. The International Organization for Migration reported that recent combat has displaced nearly 150,000 individuals. Furthermore, over 18 million yemeni citizens currently face acute food insecurity. Ultimately, the rapid military advance threatens both regional stability and millions of vulnerable civilians.
