Former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador issued a forceful rebuke against Washington on Wednesday, accusing the United States of utilizing interventionist and unscrupulous practices. López Obrador claimed these actions are designed to strengthen Mexico’s right-wing opposition and systematically weaken the leftist political movement he established. This public statement marks a rare return to the political spotlight for the highly popular former leader, who has largely avoided public commentary since leaving office in 2024. His remarks come during a period of rapidly escalating diplomatic tensions between the United States and Mexico, which is currently led by his political protégé, President Claudia Sheinbaum.
Shifting Diplomatic Relations and the Letter to Trump
In a five-page letter posted on X, López Obrador directly addressed U.S. President Donald Trump, arguing that the American leader has changed significantly since his first term in office. The former Mexican president described the Trump he previously dealt with as cooperative, pragmatic, and highly open to constructive dialogue. He blamed Trump’s current hostile political transformation on internal and external advisers, whom he characterized as false friends leading the president into vile and sinister adventures. While López Obrador no longer holds official power in the Mexican government, his forceful public intervention provides a significant show of political support for President Sheinbaum, whom he openly praised as the best president Mexico has had in modern times.
Sovereignty Claims and Legal Friction
Bilateral relations between the two neighboring nations have become increasingly strained after more than a year of relatively cooperative ties. President Sheinbaum has sharpened her administration’s rhetoric in recent days, repeatedly stepping up public calls to defend Mexican national sovereignty against foreign interference. A primary source of the recent diplomatic friction stems from a U.S. Justice Department indictment issued in April, which charged ten Mexican officials over alleged drug trafficking ties. López Obrador accused U.S. authorities of using global fights against migration and narco-terrorism as a guise to deliberately undermine Mexico’s ruling Morena party. Neither Mexican nor U.S. government officials could be immediately reached to comment on the escalating rhetoric.
