Trump’s Name is Gone From the Kennedy Center’s Facade After Court Rulings

President Donald Trump’s name no longer appears on the Kennedy Center’s facade. Matt Floca, the venue’s executive director, confirmed this compliance to a federal court on Saturday. Consequently, workers removed all physical signage that renamed the institution after the president. However, a large tarp currently covers the scaffolding. Therefore, onlookers cannot easily see the original “John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts” lettering.

Legal Battles and Leadership Changes

The center’s leadership initially fought the federal judge’s removal order. Furthermore, two different courts rejected the institution’s last-minute requests to retain Trump’s name during an appeal. Representative Joyce Beatty, who originally sued to remove the references, openly celebrated the legal victory.

Previously, Trump ousted the institution’s leadership when he returned to office in January 2025. Subsequently, the newly installed board of trustees named him chairman and quickly added his name to the building.

Broader Changes in Washington

Despite this specific legal setback, Trump is aggressively reshaping the nation’s capital. For example, he demolished the White House’s East Wing to build a controversial new ballroom. Additionally, he remodeled the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. He also plans extensive renovations to a golf course in East Potomac Park. Moreover, Trump is moving forward with a triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery.

Meanwhile, the White House South Lawn currently hosts a UFC match. This event celebrates American independence and coincides with Trump’s birthday.

An Uncertain Future for the Center

The Kennedy Center now faces a highly uncertain future. Recently, the same court decision blocked a planned two-year closure for renovations. The center’s schedule includes a few upcoming performances, but little is planned beyond June. Furthermore, the venue has substantially reduced its staff.

Angered by the court’s order, Trump suggested handing the venue over to Congress. Alternatively, he warned the center might completely shutter due to public safety concerns. The center’s leadership argued that the court is preventing necessary structural repairs. Finally, they warned that a “total collapse” is possible if renovations remain blocked.
