The United States and Iran have reached a historic agreement to end the war. Therefore, the strategic Strait of Hormuz will reopen. This decision offers great relief for the global economy after over three months of intense fighting. Furthermore, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed the news on his social media. Likewise, the president authorized lifting the naval blockade on Iranian ports.
Agreement Details and Regional Reactions
The official signing of the treaty will take place this Friday in Switzerland. Pakistan reported this as the primary mediating country. Additionally, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi ratified the pact. However, he clarified that Tehran will not apply the measures until the signing occurs.
On the other hand, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the immediate cessation of military operations on all fronts. Consequently, this also includes the ongoing fighting in Lebanon. It is important to note that the announcement followed a day of Israeli attacks against southern Beirut. In fact, Israel has remained completely sidelined from these negotiations.
The Nuclear Program Challenge
The most complex issues will be resolved later. Therefore, discussions regarding Iran’s nuclear program will continue over the next 60 days. Currently, the Tehran government possesses reserves of uranium enriched to 60%. Despite this, Iranian authorities have always defended that their plans are strictly peaceful.
Finally, the pact has received harsh criticism from the Israeli government. Likewise, several Republican Party members in the United States have shown their total disagreement. Specifically, these opponents argue that the new text does not improve the conditions of the 2015 nuclear treaty.
