Trump and Pakistan

Trump and Pakistan say Iran deal could be signed Sunday but Tehran signals more time is needed

Pakistan stated that the agreement to end the war with Iran is closer than ever. Additionally, President Donald Trump assured that the document would be signed this Sunday. Therefore, the American leader promised to open the Strait of Hormuz immediately after the signing.

However, the Tehran government indicated that it needs a little more time. Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei clarified that the signing will not happen this Sunday. Despite this, he confirmed that the likelihood of finalizing the memorandum in the coming days is high. On the other hand, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expects an electronic signing within 24 hours.

Strait Demining and the G7 Summit

Trump plans to discuss the demining of the Strait of Hormuz during the upcoming G7 summit. This important international meeting will begin on Monday. Consequently, the president will meet with the leaders of Egypt, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. These side talks will seek definitive strategies to end the conflict.

Additionally, nations like Britain and France have expressed interest in helping with the demining. Iran has effectively controlled this strait since the start of the war. As a result, shipments of oil and natural gas from the Persian Gulf are paralyzed. In response, the United States maintains a strict blockade on Iranian ports.

The Nuclear Program and Khamenei’s Funeral

Iran’s nuclear program has been left out of the current discussions. The Iranian spokesperson emphasized that the memorandum in progress focuses exclusively on ending the war. Nonetheless, Trump assured on social media that he will destroy the enriched uranium once calm returns.

Meanwhile, Iranian state television announced the details of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s funeral. The former supreme leader died during the first attack of this war. Consequently, the funeral ceremonies will take place between July 4 and 9. Finally, Khamenei will be buried at the Imam Reza Shrine in the city of Mashhad. His son, Mojtaba, has officially assumed the supreme leadership of the country.
