Typhoon Saudel closes in

Flights, ferries cancelled in Shanghai and Shenzhen as Typhoon Saudel closes in

Typhoon Approach and Flight Suspensions

Currently, the coastal Chinese province of Zhejiang is battening down for the approach of Typhoon Saudel. Specifically, the storm is forecast to make landfall between early Friday morning and noon. Consequently, local authorities have cancelled flights across several major commercial hubs. For instance, Ningbo Lishe International Airport suspended all operations from late Thursday night. Additionally, officials cancelled 90 flights in Wenzhou and grounded 22 flights in Zhoushan. Ultimately, Saudel is set to become the seventh typhoon to hit the Chinese mainland this year.

Widespread Transportation Halts and Port Closures

Furthermore, the severe weather prompted massive transportation disruptions across multiple regions. For example, the Shanghai Ferry Company announced the complete suspension of all passenger routes on Thursday. At the same time, railway operators cancelled nearly 20 high-speed trains departing from Shenzhen. Meanwhile, major maritime hubs have aggressively ramped up protective safety measures. In fact, the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port fully suspended container operations on Wednesday. Additionally, officials moved nearly 800 commercial vessels in Ningbo waters to emergency shelters.

Emergency Responses and Regional Impacts

In response to the threat, Zhejiang province remains under a serious orange weather alert. Meanwhile, the municipal government in Wenzhou updated its emergency response to Level 2. Consequently, authorities halted outdoor group activities, classes, business operations, and public transport. Moreover, scenic spots and tourist attractions across affected coastal areas are closed to the public. Looking ahead, the typhoon is expected to bring heavy rain and fierce winds across eastern and southern China. Ultimately, these severe conditions will also impact manufacturing hubs in Guangdong and Guangxi.
