Student protests force a political turning point.
India’s Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, resigned after days of nationwide demonstrations led by the youth movement known as the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). In his resignation statement, Pradhan said he stepped down to prevent further unrest and acknowledged the concerns expressed by students across the country. His departure marks the first time in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 12 years in office that sustained public pressure has forced a cabinet minister to resign.
Exam scandal sparked nationwide outrage.
The protests began after a major examination leak scandal disrupted the futures of millions of students preparing for highly competitive entrance exams. Demonstrators accused the government of failing to protect the integrity of the education system and demanded greater accountability. The movement argued that the authorities had ignored the concerns of young people, while the scandal was also linked to the deaths of more than a dozen students, intensifying calls for reform.
A youth-led movement gains momentum.
Following the minister’s resignation, CJP leaders announced the suspension of their demonstrations and described the outcome as a victory for democracy. Founder Abhijeet Dipke praised the courage of students who continued protesting despite police violence, but stressed that the resignation represented only the beginning of a broader campaign for education reform and stronger democratic rights. Many participants, particularly members of Generation Z, described the protests as their first experience in political activism and viewed them as a turning point for civic participation in India.
Calls for deeper education reform continue.
Although the government agreed to accelerate legal action related to the examination leaks, protesters emphasized that systemic changes remain necessary. Activist Sonam Wangchuk, whose 26-day hunger strike helped mobilize public support, welcomed the resignation as a triumph for democratic action. Meanwhile, demonstrators across cities such as Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai celebrated the outcome but reaffirmed that they would continue advocating for a more transparent, accountable and equitable education system.
