Key education functions will move to other federal agencies
The Trump administration announced that several responsibilities currently managed by the U.S. Department of Education will be transferred to other federal agencies. Under the new plan, the Department of Justice will oversee civil rights enforcement in education. Meanwhile, the Department of Health and Human Services will take responsibility for special education programs. In addition, the Justice Department will handle student privacy issues and provide legal guidance to educational institutions. The administration argues that these changes will improve efficiency and reduce duplication of functions.
Civil rights and special education offices are among the most affected
The restructuring directly affects the Office for Civil Rights and the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services. For decades, these offices have played a central role in protecting students and enforcing federal education laws. The Office for Civil Rights investigates complaints related to discrimination based on race, sex, disability, and religion. However, advocacy groups and disability rights organizations have expressed concern about moving these responsibilities outside the Education Department. According to critics, the transition could make it more difficult for families to access specialized support and services.
The decision advances a broader effort to reduce the department’s role
The announcement represents another step in President Donald Trump’s effort to scale back the federal role in education. Previous actions have already shifted some departmental functions to other agencies. As a result, the Education Department now oversees a smaller portfolio than in previous administrations. Supporters of the reform believe that states should have greater authority over education policy. Critics, however, question whether other agencies possess the expertise needed to manage educational programs and student protections effectively.
