Trump says oil prices that spiked because of Iran war likely won’t come down until after midterms

Election Politics and Oil Prices

Currently, President Donald Trump predicts that surging oil prices will not fall until after the upcoming midterm elections. Specifically, Trump claims that Iran is desperately trying to affect the American elections to install a weaker government. Furthermore, he firmly believes the ongoing war will end immediately after the November elections because Iran cannot hold out much longer. Consequently, the president promised voters that oil prices would finally tumble downward once the voting concludes. Ultimately, Vice President JD Vance declined to set an artificial timeline, noting that the enemy dictates when they stop attacking ships.

The Iran Conflict and Supply Chain

Meanwhile, the intense military conflict has now entered its seventh month, far exceeding initial White House estimates. For instance, the U.S.-Israel war against Iran has dramatically slowed down vital oil shipments moving through the Strait of Hormuz. In addition, this critical waterway previously handled about 20 percent of the world’s petroleum before the conflict began. Indeed, the United States has heavily tapped into its strategic petroleum reserves to combat the ongoing crisis. Therefore, the national reserve recently fell below 300 million barrels, dropping by over 100 million barrels since early 2026.

Market Impacts and Consumer Costs

Moreover, international Brent crude rapidly pushed past the $100 threshold for the first time since July. In fact, U.S. benchmark crude also stood at around $96 a barrel amid escalating military salvos. As a result, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline quickly ticked up to $4.22 overnight. Similarly, diesel prices hit an all-time high of $5.94, heavily impacting commercial shipping and basic production costs. Ultimately, recent military actions, including strikes on Iranian tankers and Saudi oil facilities, continue to drive immense global market volatility.
