N Secretary-General António Guterres urged world leaders to stop global conflicts. Speaking to Euronews at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit on Tuesday, Guterres emphasized that key decision-makers were present in the room.
Specifically, Guterres highlighted ongoing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East as major concerns. Because these conflicts seem never-ending, international stability faces severe risks. Consequently, Guterres called on leaders to embrace immediate peace negotiations.
Escalating Tensions and Diplomatic Engagement
Regarding Middle Eastern tensions, Guterres warned about renewed military strikes between Iran and Western powers. For this reason, the UN chief urged maximum restraint from all parties involved.
In fact, Guterres insisted on restarting successful diplomatic talks to protect international shipping routes. Additionally, Guterres stressed the importance of engaging with regional blocs in a multipolar world. Therefore, collaborating with Asian partners remains a top priority for the UN.
Global Economic Impact and Regional Cooperation
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation marks its twenty-fifth anniversary in Bishkek. Indeed, its ten member states represent over forty percent of the global population.
Furthermore, key leaders like Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin, and Narendra Modi attended the meeting. Because Asia houses some of the most dynamic economies, Guterres pledged continued cooperation. As a result, the UN aims to build lasting diplomatic partnerships across the region.
