A US court Trump decision has halted new immigration restrictions. Federal Judge Deborah L. Boardman issued a preliminary injunction on Wednesday.
Specifically, the ruling blocks an executive order targeting birthright citizenship. Because the Fourteenth Amendment guarantees citizenship to children born on American soil, the court protected immigrant families. Consequently, advocacy groups celebrated the judicial ruling as a victory for constitutional rights.
The Trump administration attempted to limit automatic citizenship for children of foreign nationals. For this reason, officials cited concerns regarding birth tourism across border states.
However, Judge Boardman ruled that the executive branch cannot bypass binding Supreme Court decisions. In fact, civil rights organizations argued that the policy created widespread confusion among legal residents. Therefore, federal agencies cannot deny citizenship documents while the lawsuit continues.
Immigrant defense groups including CASA joined the class-action lawsuit against Washington. Indeed, legal representatives warned against broad definitions of foreign threats.
Meanwhile, White House attorneys argued that the injunction request was premature. Furthermore, civil rights leaders pledged to defend constitutional protections in federal court. As a result, birthright citizenship remains fully protected across all United States territories
