Venezuela Health Minister Says Around 235 People Dead and 4,300 Injured in Catastrophic Earthquakes

Devastation and Rescue Efforts

Venezuelans are desperately searching for survivors beneath collapsed buildings after a pair of powerful earthquakes struck the northern areas of the country. According to Health Minister Carlos Alvarado, the catastrophic event has killed around 235 people and left at least 4,300 injured. These figures are expected to rise rapidly as thousands remain missing following the 7.2- and 7.5-magnitude tremors. Furthermore, the coastal region of La Guaira suffered some of the heaviest damage, forcing the closure of the country’s main airport and severely complicating ongoing rescue operations.

Government Response and Local Frustrations

In response to the devastation, acting President Delcy Rodríguez declared a national state of emergency and announced a $200 million reconstruction fund to repair damaged hospitals and homes. Consequently, authorities diverted rescue teams from across the country to La Guaira, which Rodríguez officially designated as a disaster zone. Despite these government assurances, many panicked residents in Caracas expressed deep frustration over the lack of heavy machinery, leaving neighbors to dig through the rubble themselves. To manage the crisis, the government suspended subway services, shut off natural gas, and canceled school classes to convert buildings into emergency shelters.

International Aid and Policy Shifts

The international community responded swiftly, with leaders from Mexico, Qatar, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, and Canada vowing to send immediate aid. In a significant policy shift, the United States Treasury moved to temporarily waive certain sanctions until late October to allow transactions related to earthquake relief efforts. Moreover, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the rapid deployment of search and rescue teams alongside crucial medical resources. Additionally, following urgent requests from United Nations officials, the Venezuelan government lifted restrictions on the social media platform X, allowing citizens to access life-saving information during the crisis.
