Brookings Finds Most Americans Say the Iran War Is Bad for the United States

Public Opinion Turns Against the War

Most Americans believe that the Iran war has harmed U.S. interests. According to Brookings, a University of Maryland Critical Issues Poll found that a majority of Americans say the war has affected American interests more negatively than positively. The poll was conducted by Ipsos among 1,377 adults between May 15 and May 21, 2026, as the conflict reached a critical stage.

Weak Perception of U.S. Success

The article also shows that few Americans think the United States is winning the war. Brookings reports that fewer than one in six Americans say the U.S. has won or is winning. At the same time, 38 percent of respondents said that neither Iran nor the United States has won or is currently winning, while many others said they did not know or believed it was too early to tell.

Partisan and Generational Differences

Public opinion remains divided by party, but skepticism is visible across political groups. Brookings notes that 84 percent of Democrats and 63 percent of independents say the war has had more negative than positive effects. Even among Republicans, negative assessments are higher than positive ones. In addition, majorities of both younger and older Americans say the war has harmed U.S. interests, showing that concern is not limited to one age group.

Political Pressure on the Trump Administration

The findings create pressure for the Trump administration as it considers whether to extend the fragile truce with Iran or continue the conflict. Brookings argues that the war has not produced the traditional “rally around the flag” effect often seen at the start of U.S. military conflicts. Instead, public opposition has remained strong, and doubts about the war’s effectiveness have grown across different segments of the population.

International Relevance

Overall, the Brookings analysis shows that U.S. public opinion can shape foreign policy decisions with global consequences. If Americans increasingly see the Iran war as harmful, Washington may face greater pressure to limit military escalation and prioritize diplomacy. For this reason, the poll matters internationally because U.S. domestic attitudes can influence Middle East stability, energy markets, alliances and the future of American foreign policy.
