UNESCO and Palestine strengthen cooperation on curriculum reform.
UNESCO and the Palestinian Ministry of Education and Higher Education convened a high-level workshop in Paris to advance the country’s curriculum renewal process. Organized by the International Bureau of Education (IBE-UNESCO), the meeting brought together policymakers, curriculum specialists, and international experts to discuss strategies for improving educational quality. The initiative reflects a shared commitment to developing a curriculum capable of responding to contemporary educational challenges while supporting national development priorities.
Curriculum renewal seeks to improve learning outcomes and relevance.
A central objective of the discussions was the creation of a more coherent and effective curriculum that strengthens student learning. Participants explored ways to improve literacy, mathematics, and science achievement while promoting competency-based education. The workshop also addressed the importance of aligning curriculum content with assessment systems and teacher preparation programs, ensuring that educational reforms translate into meaningful improvements in classroom practice and student performance.
A National Curriculum Framework will guide future educational reforms.
One of the main outcomes of the workshop was the agreement to advance the development of a National Curriculum Framework for Palestine. This framework will serve as a strategic reference for future curriculum design, implementation, and evaluation. UNESCO experts and Palestinian authorities identified priority areas including curriculum assessment, teacher professional development, and institutional capacity-building, establishing a roadmap intended to support both immediate educational needs and long-term system transformation.
Education plays a critical role in resilience and recovery.
The article emphasizes that curriculum reform is taking place within a complex humanitarian context that continues to affect Palestinian learners and educational institutions. UNESCO views education as a fundamental tool for resilience, social cohesion, and sustainable development. Beyond curriculum renewal, the organization supports initiatives such as the Gaza Virtual University Campus, learning continuity programs, scholarships, and psychosocial support services, helping thousands of students maintain access to education despite ongoing challenges.
